Students in grades 9-12 can enroll in classes at Mercer County Technical Education Center. Students at MCTEC participate in hands-on learning activities and projects. Students in Dental Assisting, Grow Your Own, Healthcare Occupations/Therapeutics, and Pre-Cosmetology/Nail Technology engage in clinical hours to apply career skills.
By completing career technical programs, students may earn embedded academic credits. Career technical completers of all West Virginia Board of Education (WVBE) state-approved programs receive FREE college credit/EDGE credit at any Community Technical College in West Virginia upon enrollment. Articulation agreements are in place with some colleges and universities for career technical completers to gain free college credit upon enrollment within the respective institutions.
Dual Credit Pathways are also available at MCTEC which enable students to earn FREE college credit and high school credit. During the 2023/24 school year, 57 students were enrolled in Dual Credit Pathways at MCTEC. Five of those students completed 60 or more FREE college classes to achieve their Associate of General Studies Degree from New River Community and Technical College before graduating from high school in May of 2024.
